Most people think of a disability case as built from medical records — clinical notes, imaging reports, treatment summaries. Those documents matter. But there is another category of evidence that most claimants are already generating every day and almost no one is using.

What Wearable Devices Actually Capture
Modern wearables — Apple Watch, Fitbit, Garmin, Samsung Health — generate a continuous stream of objective health data. Not self-reported. Not filtered through a clinical encounter. Timestamped measurements running every day whether you see a provider or not.
The data most relevant to SSA disability evaluation includes daily step counts and activity patterns, sleep duration and fragmentation, heart rate during rest and activity, and oxygen saturation trends. In the context of a disability claim, these metrics are remarkably powerful.
Why This Data Matters for SSA
SSA evaluates what you can do on a sustained, consistent basis — not on your best day, not on your worst day, but reliably, day after day, in a work context. The clinical record struggles to answer this question because it samples selectively and infrequently.
Wearable data answers it directly.
A claimant who reports inability to stand or walk for extended periods has a documented daily step count. A claimant who reports non-restorative sleep has six months of sleep fragmentation data. A claimant who reports that activity significantly worsens their pain has a heart rate and recovery pattern that reflects exactly that physiological response.
The device does not know you are filing a disability claim. It does not have good days and bad days in the documentation sense. It simply records what your body does, continuously, across the entire period your clinical record is silent.
The Longitudinal Advantage
The most powerful aspect of wearable data is not any single measurement — it is the longitudinal pattern. Six months of daily step data showing a consistent ceiling of 800 to 1,200 steps is a different kind of evidence than a provider noting “limited ambulation” in one clinic visit. A year of sleep data showing consistent fragmentation is more compelling than a claimant reporting poor sleep at a single appointment.
Longitudinal data also captures the variability that chronic pain produces — the crash after an active day, the multi-day recovery pattern, the difference between a functional window and a baseline state. This is the functional reality that the clinical record almost never captures and that SSA adjudicators almost never see.
What to Do Right Now
If you wear a device, start treating the data as part of your medical record. That means not resetting or deleting historical data, exporting and preserving it regularly, and pairing it with a consistent log of your functional activities and limitations.
